Interface Expands ReEntry Program

May 9, 2012

Interface is finalizing a strategic partnership with The Carpet Recyclers, a La Mirada, CA-based business that, since its establishment two years ago, has diverted more than 150 million pounds of used carpet from West Coast landfills, saved over 15 million gallons of oil and created more than 100 green jobs. In sealing the relationship, Interface is following through on an aggressive expansion of its own carpet recycling system, ReEntry, to encompass carpet recycling specialists in regional hubs throughout North America.

A growing appetite in North America for carpet tile, and the practical flooring solution it offers, has multiplied an exponential need for the recycled fiber that ReEntry yields. The scarcity of post consumer nylon also is limiting the company’s key yarn suppliers, and these are among the reasons Interface launched a ReEntry expansion initiative last year. This drive is to help identify existing recyclers—like The Carpet Recyclers—that the manufacturer can fully partner with; or, taking a slightly different tack, find startups or others in waste management who are receptive to Interface’s experienced mentoring and the incorporation of a ReEntry-type system. In fact, the expansion initiative began with the latter approach, as Interface teamed with Aspera Recycling Inc. in Toronto. According to Wells, Interface is guiding Aspera on the technology to procure for its operations and the processing of carpet tile on the scale of ReEntry. A fall start date is anticipated.

Certification Corner: Crossville Earns Green Squared Certification

May 7, 2012

American porcelain tile manufacturer Crossville has earned Green Squared certification from the Tile Council of North America (TCNA) for its entire U.S.-manufactured porcelain product line-up, as well as its manufacturing processes. The company is among the first ever recipients of this newly minted certification standard for the tile industry.

TCNA developed the Green Squared certification under American National Standards Institute (ANSI)process. The multi-attribute program (ANSI A138.1) scores products in five categories of performance: product characteristics, manufacturing, corporate governance, innovation and end-of-life. Crossville’s certified products and processes received stringent evaluation from Scientific Certification Systems (SCS), the green building industry’s longest standing third-party certifier and the premium certification body for Green Squared.

Benjamin Moore Receives Green Good Housekeeping Seal

May 3, 2012

Good Housekeeping has announced the first product to earn the Green Good Housekeeping Seal in its Paint and Coatings category, Benjamin Moore Natura in flat, eggshell and semi-gloss finishes.

Benjamin Moore Natura is a water-based line of zero-VOC (volatile organic compound) paints for interior use. The Natura paints are virtually odorless, spatter resistant and have good wash-ability performance, and the colorants that are added at the time of purchase are water-based, providing a full range of colors without adding VOCs. In Good Housekeeping Research Institute’s environmental evaluations, the product scored particularly well in reduction of energy use and waste production in the manufacturing process, as well as for the innovative development of a tinted product with zero VOCs, and the company’s commitment to improving distribution practices.
