May 8, 2012
The ASID has announced the induction of four design leaders into the ASID College of Fellows. The title of Fellow, the highest honor a member can receive from ASID, is given in recognition of outstanding service and contributions to the Society, the profession and the interior design industry. The 2012 Class of Fellows will be honored on June 11, 2012, at Celebration — The Society’s annual awards ceremony held at NeoCon.

The 2012 ASID Class of Fellows:
BJ Miller, FASID
- For more than 25 years, BJ Miller has been promoting the profession of interior design through her practice, service to ASID and academic endeavors. Founder and president of The Vision Group Studios, and founder and managing partner of Urban Redevelopment Alliance in east Tennessee, Miller’s work centers on outcome-based, human-centric design goals. Her practice focuses on promoting ageless living and creating generative space in the development, design and identity of senior living and health environments. To engage others in her design philosophy, she developed a graduate program with a concentration in health design through the University of Tennessee College of Architecture and Design and created a multidisciplinary course on designing environments for health.
Darrell Schmitt, FASID
- Darrell Schmitt is a wise leader, dedicated volunteer and professional whose talents have benefitted both the Louisiana and Los Angeles chapters during more than 30 years of service to the Society. Throughout his distinguished career, Schmitt has received numerous awards and honors for his designs, including 2009 ASID Designer of Distinction, the ASID Los Angeles Chapter Lil Chain Award for Design Excellence, the ASID Foundation Yale Burge Award and multiple Hospitality Design Gold Key Awards. He has also long been involved in DIFFA, serving as chair of DIFFA/LA, as well civic and arts organizations in New Orleans and Los Angeles. In 2008, the Los Angeles chapter presented him with the Chapter Medalist Award for his outstanding service.
Linda Heinz, FASID
- Linda Heinz is regarded as the consummate professional designer, willing to give of herself and her resources to enhance the interior design profession. Over the past 30 years, she has served in numerous leadership roles with ASID and has also volunteered her time with local civic organizations and activities focused on the arts, education and AIDS awareness. Her designs, which have garnered multiple awards, have been featured on numerous local TV programs and in magazines. She has received many honors for her volunteer leadership and service, including Chapter Medalist and Designer of Distinction from the Arizona North Chapter and three ASID Presidential Citations.
Brad Powell, Hon. FASID
- Co-founder, publisher and editor of the weekly trade newsletter, officeinsight, Brad Powell has spent the past 17 years “giving voice to those who create workplace design and furnishings,” as his publication proclaims. A former Wall Street attorney, Powell brings an incisive and balanced perspective to his coverage of the design industry. His passion for design and admiration for the men and women whose creativity and talent result in great products and spaces come through in each issue. Powell has been a vocal proponent of shifting the industry paradigm more toward human needs and performance, and of urging designers to take a more business-like approach to their practice. A long-time supporter of ASID and other industry organizations, he has used his newsletter to positively comment on and publicize the importance of interior designers to the built environment, as well as the importance of ASID to interior designers.
