Le Corbusier — Miracle Boxes, the first New York exhibition to feature the legendary Swiss-French architect, will open on August 30 at Pratt Institute. The show is curated by Pratt professor Ivan Shumkov and will feature a look at Corbu’s public buildings, sculptural work and art. The show runs from August 30 – October 15.
From August 21 to November 21, 2010, Fabrica, the Benetton group’s communication research center, presents Shifting Perspectives, its latest collections of objects for the house at the Guadagni Showroom in Venice.
Down Side Up is an encounter between experimentation and consumption, where design challenges shapes, volume perception and directions to create objects with constantly varying functions and interpretations. And so by adding a few essential accessories like legs, handles, hooks or hands, and by choosing a precise orientation, a simple basic wood unit is transformed into something new with a unique personality. The heart of each unit is a hole, a functional element which also gives the unit an aesthetic value. Therefore the effectiveness of each article lies in its versatility of use and its potential for creating customised modular systems.
The Riot Act is a collection of 12 decorative articles. The collection takes its name from the 1713 Act of the British Parliament which gave local authorities the right to order the dispersal of groups of 12 or more people deemed unlawfully assembled. Each of the 12 designers from Fabrica was given a ceramic cylinder to transform it in form and function through modifications, processes or additions of new elements.
Both the collections will be available for purchase at the Guadagni Showroom.
Starting during the opening week of the Venice Biennale of Architecture, and arriving in Verona for the 25th anniversary of the International Design Trade Show “Abitare il Tempo”, the sustainable design and its protagonists will meet and present themselves through exhibits, conferences, events and cultural interaction at Sustainable Design Week.
The Sustainable Design Week is a cultural and communication project, promoted by Amplificatore Culturale and Brandit, whose main objective is to promote and disseminate sustainable design. A macro-event comprising of a series of initiatives that involve and educate consumers and professionals in sustainable design.
Blurring the boundaries between architecture and industrial design, Lucent Saddles is the outcome of a collaboration between design office PATTERNS, and the material science experts at the 3form Advanced Technology Group.

PATTERNS’ inventive design pushes the aesthetic and atmospheric possibilities of 3Form’s Varia Ecoresin® system, creating a sculptural ensemble marked by translucent color, organic materials, sheer textiles and embossed textures. The project explores the power of sophisticated rendering and manufacturing techniques—deploying concepts like “saddle surface” geometry and non-uniform tiling—to produce playful and luminous solid objects.
Lucent Saddles will be exhibited at the Austrian Pavilion as part of the 12th edition of the Venice Biennale. Curated by a foreign architect for first time in its history and with an impressive international constituency, “Under Construction”, is organized by Commissioner Eric Owen Moss and will run from August 29 to November 21, 2010.
