IIDA NY Lester Interior Design Competition Winners

July 1, 2010

The IIDA New York Chapter is pleased to announce the winners of the IIDA NY Lester Interior Design Competition.

Fortune Global 500

Mancini Duffy: Fortune Global 500 Investment Center

This Annual Competition was established in 2004 to recognize extraordinary design projects and to honor the members of the New York Chapter of the IIDA for their contributions to these exceptional projects and the design teams that created them. Full list of winners after the jump.

Lester Dundes, legendary publisher of Interior Design Magazine, was a tireless advocate for the interior design profession. He was especially proud of having established the Interior Design “Hall of Fame” to honor the top designers in the industry. IIDA NY established the Lester Dundes Interior Design Competition to honor his memory.

IA Interior Architects: Bancolombia

Commercial Over 50,000 SF
Bancolombia – IA Interior Architects
Judges’ Comments: Great planning. Efficient modular sectioning, excellent clarity of design. Loved the incorporation of art which really reflects brand flexibility.

Mancini Duffy: Fortune Global 500 Investment Center

Commercial Under 50,000 SF
Fortune Global 500 Investment Center – Mancini Duffy
Judges’ Comments: Departure from traditional call centers, very well targeted toward their staff, a younger demographic. Great effort to steer away from an understandably stressful environment. Good sense of light and color. All translates to a “moving forward” approach to call centers setting the bar for like companies to do the same.

Marner Architecture: LIM College

Educational/Institutional
LIM College – Marner Architecture
Judges’ Comments: Good use of space. Design immediately makes you aware of the culture and vibe of the school. Design is sensitive to users. Excellent use of graphics.

Perkins Eastman: Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center

Healthcare
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center – Perkins Eastman
Judges’ Comments: Design takes a human approach for a warm user/patient experience. Nice logic to the plan. Inviting and comfortable without looking dated.

Rockwell Group: Morgans Hotel Group

Hospitality
Ames Hotel – Rockwell Group
Judges’ Comments: Excellent awareness and sensitivity to existing architecture. Eclectic and whimsical without going “over the top”. Beautifully staged and memorable. A user would remember staying there. Good use of form and texture.

Joe Serrins Studio: Marina Towers

Residential
Private Residence, Marina Towers, Beirut, Lebanon – Joe Serrins Studio
Judges’ Comments: Simple, clean, sophisticated. The craftsmanship on walls and ceiling, which tells a beautiful cultural story is exquisite and perfectly harmonizes and accentuates but does not overwhelm. A unique and bold undertaking by this design firm.

II by IV: Donato Salon & Spa

Retail
Donato Salon & Spa – II by IV
Judges’ Comments: Functional with clean lines and well planned spaces, the salon has a spacious feel. The neutral color palette will promote calmness at the height of chaos. Timeless décor. Good friction between old and new. Terrific hair graphics add a bit of levity.

HLW: Confidential Media Client

Judge’s Award
Confidential Media Client – HLW International LLP
Judges’ Comments: Inspiring workplace. Uplifting. Love the integration of the arch and the interior space. Successful adaptation and repurposing. Thorough recovery of artifacts and historical value. Subtle use of props. Good use and order of space.
