Be Our Guest: Soucie Horner’s Postcards From India

February 23, 2010

From our guest editor Martin Horner of Soucie Horner:

Just returned from another inspiring day of sights, sounds and experiences in India! Wow…where do I begin? India is a place defined by its contrasts. Where there is squalor, there is also a tangible sense of pride and reverence for the traditions that have defined their rich culture. We visited several weavers today, hoping for that creative spark. Just like everything in life, you often have to unturn many stones before you find it. The first few vendors were very commercial, but eventually we discovered some true jewels. And once we found these incredible places, our work began! The weavers seemed fascinated by our search, which in turn delighted us. We have commissioned rug samples from two separate “families,” and our expectations are high. But for now, we are off to a quick trip to the Ganges River, followed by a journey to Jaipur tomorrow. Leaving at 5:45 am. Ouch, but totally worth it!

This is the most organized chaos I have ever witnessed. Even though we had a driver, it was still crazy. Sounds: honk, honk, honk. Sights: village after village of the same, total disarray everywhere. Cows, chickens, dogs, goats, camels, bikes, motor scooters, cars, buses, rickshaws. Four people on a bike with trucks whizzing. And when I asked our driver about road fatalities, he said they rarely occur! When we arrived at our hotel, the gates opened and a bomb squad checked us out. And then once we entered the lobby, the atmosphere was full of love and joy! A wedding party was arriving and there were bands, music, lights and dancing. We were pulled into the party and danced like it was the end of the world. Amongst the cameras and clapping, I felt like I was in a movie. The wedding party thanked us for being part of their celebration and many hugs, kisses and blessings were exchanged.

As we take all of this in, our collection is taking shape. Being here will give it meaning, purpose. Not just pretty colors, but a part of our experience will live in these designs. And hopefully people will feel the energy and inspiration of our experience!

I wasn’t certain that was my sister until I noticed that the woman was wearing all black. No wonder the bomb squad searched your car! Glad you both made it back safely. Very nice perspective on the many ways people live and find meaning in life…It’s amazing how much chance plays in the way we spend our days.
