Who: Lucy Hamblin, photographer and artist
What: The neurotic and frustrated bird on the right hand page titled ” The Bather” (La Baigneuse) is in fact a self-portrait. It was part of a series carried out during a particularly sore point of homesickness for the Europe I abandoned. The blue coloring was chosen to reference French Toile de Jouy fabrics. The excerpts scrawled across the page from it are, again, about loss and failure of first loves; and baffled expectation as to whether anything can ever come again. There are notes also from films I had viewed; a heart lacerating documentary called Trouble the Water, about death and the hurricane; and a prolific quote from Hunter S Thompson.
The Polaroid on this page was taken of the second of my unflinching and dedicated muses- the first being my dust riddled teenage sister- the second (shown here) my friend and assistant, Dru. For this shot I had cut the crotch out of a woman’s sequined jumpsuit, his posture is still restrained as the suit was still far too small for him. There is something deeply moving about these two muses and their unquestioning response to my work.

Born in England and influenced heavily by her great grandfather’s textile business, Lucy Hamblin began drawing, sewing and sculpting at an early age. As she grew, she honed her art, enrolling at Central Saint Martins and eventually moving to New York City to continue her career as a freelance photographer. Working predominantly within the music industry for the last few years, touring frequently with musicians, she has photographed regularly for Rolling Stone, Time magazine and Celeste. She won The Independent/ American Express Photography Award, and was shortlisted for the Dazed and Confused Big Break Award. She continues to make and exhibit art work in a wide variety of mediums.
**Thanks to Lucy for letting us take such an intimate peak into her life and sketchbook over the past few weeks. Her work is awesome…be sure to take a look.
