Mr. Tigerman’s building credits as principal designer include institutional projects such as The Five Polytechnic Institutes in Bangladesh, The Illinois Regional Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped in Chicago and The POWERHOUSE Energy Museum in Zion, Illinois. He has completed both mixed use high rise and low rise housing projects throughout the United States, as well as in Germany and Japan, and he has designed exhibition installations for museums in the United States, Portugal and Puerto Rico. From the more than 390 projects defining his career, over 175 built works embrace virtually every building type.

What: Drinks with a Designer: Nicholas Leahy

Why: Nicholas Leahy, principal at Perkins Eastman, will give a behind the scenes tour of the recently opened TKTS booth in Times Square. Leahy along with structural engineer Michael Ludvik from Dewhurst Macfarlane will discuss the structural innovation and construction challenges of the project. The conversation and visit will be a revealing look at an iconic piece of infrastructure within a highly urbanized site. Following the tour, casual conversation will continue over drinks at a nearby bar. Drinks with a Designer is open to all young designers five years or less out of school; whether you are a graphic, industrial, or fashion designer, an artist or architect, Design in 5 invites you to attend. Why: Held over four days in the middle of January as the first trade fair of the year, Heimtextil serves as a platform for manufacturers, the trade and designers from all over the world. In 2008, over 2,800 exhibitors from 65 countries presented their products to over 86,000 international trade visitors barely a stone’s throw from the city center, in the halls of Frankfurt Fair and Exhibition Centre.

Why: What does the line between reality and fiction look like? Can an exhibition be a life-sized paper model of itself? Whose name didn’t make the press release? And if it sounds good on paper, where is the paper? These enigmatic questions locate Paper Exhibition at the periphery of the known - between paper architecture and new pages of old books. The exhibition renders the open space of the gallery as a labyrinth of folds, holes and gaps through which an exchange between the literal and the literary can happen.

What: Tokujin Yoshioka’s Second Nature, from the depths of a sea of memories

Why: This exhibition questions the future of design as well as the mysterious powers of nature which transcend the limits of human imagination. Tokujin Yoshioka, the director of the exhibition, has attempted to incorporate in his own design work the many laws that exist in nature, while at the same time exploring the possibilities of technology.
What: China Design Now
When: Through Monday, January 19
Where: Cincinnati Art Museum
Cincinnati, OH
Why: This exhibition explores the recent explosion of new design in China, where dynamic economic development and rapid cultural change are fueling unprecedented innovation in the country’s design industries. The exhibition features the work of emerging and established Chinese fashion designers, graphic artists, and architects-as well as major projects in China by Western architects and designers.
